Time for the harvest!
(収穫の時が来ました)

On June 10th, the 1st grade of junior high school students enjoyed harvesting potatoes.
The potatoes were planted in April, which means that they grew for 2 months. The students were surprised at how fast the potatoes grow.
(6月10日（火）、中学1年生はジャガイモの収穫を楽しみました。
4月に植えたので、ジャガイモは2ヶ月で育ったことになります。生徒たちはジャガイモの発育の早さに驚いていました。)

 

The students listened to the harvesting procedure which was explained by teachers and students from the neighboring university.
They experienced much field work but each job was different, so they must pay attention to what elders were saying.
(生物資源の先生と学生たちからジャガイモ収穫の手順を聞きました。
生徒たちは多くのフィールドワークを行ってきましたが、毎回手順は異なります。そのため、生徒たちは先生や学生たちが言っていることによく注意をする必要がありました。)

 

Carrying the boxes to store potatoes, the students went to the field.
(ジャガイモを入れる箱を運びながら、生徒たちは畑に向かいました。)

 

Potatoes! There were enormous amount of potatoes buried in the field. It is like a treasure hunt. The students worked hard and found plenty of potatoes. Some of them screamed when they found insects living in the soil.
(ジャガイモが出ました！土の中にはとても多くのジャガイモが埋まっていました。まるで宝探しみたいですね。生徒たちは一生懸命に掘って、沢山のジャガイモを見つけました。土にいた虫に悲鳴をあげている生徒もいました。)
There were a lot of vegetables planted by the students. After harvesting potatoes, students took care of other vegetables which they planted in previously.
(生徒が植えた野菜は他にも沢山あります。ジャガイモの収穫後、以前に植えた他の野菜の世話もしました。)

The students were divided into 10 groups of 8 – 10. Each group competes with each other for how many potatoes they could put in the box. That’s why they were measuring the amount they harvested.
(班は合計10班で、8~10人ずついます。各班は箱にどれくらい多くの量のジャガイモを入れることができたかを競い合っています。そのため、生徒たちは収穫したジャガイモの重さを測っています。)

 

Finally, the result was written on the white board. Group 2 and 3 won this time with 65.9 kg. However, we’ll have a 2nd opportunity for the harvest competition. Other groups still have a chance to win.
(最終結果がホワイトボードに出ました。65.8kgで、2班と3班が勝ちました。次の収穫でも測定をするので、他の班にもまだ勝つチャンスはあります。)

 

Harvested potatoes were shared equally between the students. They could put the potatoes in the plastic bags and take them home. We don’t use any chemicals on the vegetables so they can enjoy organic potatoes at home.
(収穫したジャガイモを生徒に平等に配りました。ビニール袋に入れ、持ち帰ることができました。農薬を使っていないので、有機栽培のジャガイモを食べることができます。)
